Lochore Welfare 3 Newburgh 0
Newburgh’s poor run of form away from East Shore Park continued on Saturday with a defeat at the hands of Lochore Welfare.
With manager Andy Healey leaving the club the weekend prior senior player James Adam took the reins for the home side.
Newburgh manager Hudson selected Scott Sutherland and Ryan Hughes up front beside Craig Robinson who had grabbed a brace the weekend before in the cup tie with Lochgelly Albert.
From the kick off it was obvious that Lochore were fired up and looking to put in a performance with their side full of energy and pressing Newburgh at every opportunity.
Newburgh struggled to get into the game in the early stages and were unable to create anything going forwards. With 20 minutes played Newburgh were awarded a free kick half midway in the Lochore half of the pitch. Jack Hutchison swung a cross into the box that the home defence cleared into the Newburgh half. McNeish broke and was able to steal the ball from Hutchison who had made good ground up to get between the Lochore forward and the ball only to lose his footing as he went to clear the ball. Calum Sutherland in the Burgh goal slipped at the same time and could not correct himself as he watch McNeish’s chip loop over his head into the ‘Burgh goal to give Lochore the lead.
Newburgh pushed hard towards the end of the first half looking for an equaliser with a series of corners which were defended well by the home side. As the half drew to a close Ryan Hughes made a break down the right outpacing his marker and getting to the bye line where a clumsy challenge from the defender up ended the ‘Burgh striker at pace causing him to slide into a post that borders the pitch. Attention was given by the Newburgh physio allowing Hughes to re-join the game as the half ended.
Ryan Hughes tried to run off the knock but had to be replaced 5 minutes into the second half by Kyle Fraser.
With ten minutes of the second half played Lochore doubled their lead. A ball back to Sutherland in the ‘Burgh goal bobbled just in front of the keeper and his clearance squirted off his boot to Lochore striker Johnstone who drove forward and placed a shot past Sutherland in to the net.
‘Burgh manager Hudson tried to change the game with Fraser Robinson replacing Ryan Smart on the hour. Robinson’s fresh legs aided Newburgh going forward. Willie Wright was unlucky with a volley that shot over the Lochore bar. Newburgh pressed the game trying to get themselves into contention but the Lochore back line stood firm restricting Newburgh to half chances.
With 5 minutes remaining in the game Lochore capitalised on Newburgh pushing up the park when a long ball from the goalkeeper caught out the ‘Burgh defence. Johnstone took a superb first touch on the edge of the 18 yard box and placed a shot high into the net giving Sutherland no chance in the ‘Burgh goal.
Manager Hudson was disappointed in his sides lack lustre performance “we were really off the pace today, there was no cohesion to anything we did in the park. It is a tough one to take having broken our away duck last week we were looking to push on. We will sit down this week and have a good talk through the game with the players and get this game out of our system so that we are fresh for next weekend’s game”.
