Newburgh travelled to Rosyth’s temporary home at the Fleet Grounds in one of the few games to go ahead with heavy rain and high winds putting paid to almost every fixture that was not being played on 4g surfaces.

James Robson was drafted in to take his place between the sticks with regular No1 Calum Sutherland falling foul of a bug. Robson had previously played for Newburgh in season 2017-18.

Newburgh opened the game well taking play to the hosts with the pace of Edwards and Robinson causing the home defence problems from the off. Newburgh stretched the game and were looking likeliest of the two sides to open the scoring in the first quarter of the game. Scott Sutherland and Andy Cameron came closest to breaking the dead lock with efforts from corner kicks that were whipped into the box by Aidan Edwards.

Newburgh eventually gained the lead that with a goal from Scott Sutherland in the 35th minute. Ben Scarborough fed an inch perfect pass in behind the retreating home defence that Sutherland latched on to. Penman in the Rosyth goal came off his line in an effort to stop Sutherland, the ‘Burgh striker took a fantastic touch to round the keeper and slot the ball into the open net giving Newburgh a well-deserved lead.

Newburgh created several more chances as they pushed to add to their lead before the break. The home defence held out restricting Newburgh to the single goal lead at the break.

Rosyth started the second half on the front foot and looked a different team from the off, grabbing an equalising goal after only 2 minutes of the half had been played.

The game continued at a frantic pace with both sides creating and missing chances aplenty. Newburgh were forced to make two changes in quick succession with Kyle Fraser and Andy Cameron picking up knocks being replaced by Callum Galloway and Gordon Clark. Shortly after these enforced changes Rosyth were awarded a penalty when Sibanda was up-ended in the box by three Newburgh defenders. Hampson made no mistake from the penalty spot leaving Newburgh training by the odd goal in three.

Newburgh almost equalized in the 75th minute with Scott Sutherland rising highest to drive a bullet of a header goal bound from a Jamie Gay corner. The ball struck the post with penman well beaten rebounding to safety.

Newburgh freshened up the attack with Harry Galloway replacing Aidan Edwards in the front line.

Hampson who had been quiet up until the penalty sprung into life grabbed his side’s third goal in the 77th minute with some excellent play making space for a left footed drive placed perfectly into the corner of the net.

Newburgh responded quickly and with 80 minutes on the clock they pulled themselves back into the game when a goalmouth scramble ended with Scott Sutherland nodding the ball over the line.

The pace of the game did not drop with this as Newburgh pushed hard for an equaliser. In their attempts to draw level Newburgh were always wary of the counter attack. Rosyth won a corner from a quick break and Hampson was again in the right place to flick a header at the near post over Robson to re-establish the 2 goal cushion that would allow the home side to see the game out.

Manager Scott Hudson was disappointed when he spoke after the game “We were well on top in the first half but just could not convert any of the chances we were creating. We talked at half time about Rosyth starting the second half quickly and we were caught conceding the goal with only two minutes played which is really disappointing. I felt that if we could have contained them till the 60 minute mark we would have been favourites to go and take all the points”.

Newburgh have a home fixture this Saturday with Linlithgow Rose CFC the visitors to East Shore Park, kick off is at 1:45 pm.
