Match report – Newburgh v Bo’ness UTD JFC

v

Newburgh faced Bo’ness Utd in this South Premier league fixture looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season the previous weekend.

With holidays and injuries restricting Newburgh to 2 fit substitutes this was going to be a stern test against the previously un-defeated Bo’ness side.

Newburgh started the game well taking the pay to the visitors with the front two of Sutherland and Gay causing problems from the off. Sutherland almost opened the scoring on the 7th minute, latching on to a long ball over the defence. Sutherland’s pace took him beyond the last defender, the goalkeeper was quick off his line to close the angle with Sutherland’s shot hitting the post and rebounding allowing a defender to clear.

At the other end Calum Sutherland was called into action twice in quick succession pulling off superb reaction saves from Bo’ness attempts to maintain a clean sheet.

Newburgh finally broke the deadlock on the 34th minute with Jamie Gay latching on to a loose ball inside the penalty area. Gay’s quick feet allowed him to make enough space to slot the ball low into the corner of the net.

Newburgh took the game to Bo’ness and were rewarded with a second goal before half time. Clark took a free kick from just outside Newburgh’s 18 yard box and placed a perfect diagonal pass into Robinson’s path. A superb first touch allowed Robinson to attack his marker at pace. The Bo’ness defender looked to have stolen the ball from Robinson, but the tenacious wide man stole the ball back and bore in on goal. The keeper came off his line to narrow the angle but Robinson slotted the ball past him into the net.

With the second goal providing a cushion Newburgh saw out the first half taking the advantage into the break.

The second half found Bo’ness holding a good proportion of the possession but unable to break down Newburgh defence with chances for either side few and far between. Newburgh’s midfield were playing well with Hutchison and McKinnon in the central areas breaking up any attacks before they were allowed to develop. The wide combinations of Scarborough and Annandale on the left with Fraser and Robinson on the right were stretching the play making it hard for Bo’ness to build any momentum. Any attacks that did break through found Clark and Kirkham in superb form at the centre of the defence.

Newburgh grew into the half and from the hour mark looked to increase their lead, with Sutherland and McKinnon coming close. As time ran on Newburgh managed play well breaking up play and frustrating the visitors who could not find any way through towards the ‘Burgh goal.

Newburgh manager Scott Hudson was pleased to see his side back to winning ways, “last weeks result could have set us back if we had allowed it as momentum is massive in football. Thankfully the lads responded well today and we got the result that we needed before the break for the cup tie next weekend. Everyone stepped up today every one of them played well and I have nothing but praise for their performance”.

Newburgh travel to Sauchie on Saturday to play in the 1st round of the DJ Laing East Region Cup
