Brechin Vics 3 Newburgh 0
With Steve Fortune and Struan Christie returning to the starting line-up Newburgh’s midfield gained some experience and pace. A late call off required a shuffle of the starting line up with Ryan Brocklebank having to fall back from midfield into defence,
With the strong low sun in their eyes high balls into the box were causing problems for the ‘Burgh defence. Brechin opened the scoring after only 6 minutes taking advantage of the conditions to get to the bye line and swing a speculative ball across the box that was turned past Warrender.
Newburgh worked hard in midfield to turn the game around. Newburgh imposed themselves on the game and started to press the Brechin defence with Woods running causing them problems Several chances were created the best of which saw Anderson turn the ball just past the post having beaten his man and leaving himself only the keeper to beat. As the half drew to an end the home side were the far happier team to get into the dressing room at a time when Newburgh looked to equalise.
The second half started in a similar fashion with both Anderson and Woods having decent chances to tie the score. The game turned on the 56th minute. A through ball to the Brechin lone striker was dealt with by Perrie who had both Connolly and O’Brien covering. In making the tackle Perrie clipped the heels of the Brechin striker which to the amazement of the Newburgh bench led to the referee issuing a straight red card to the ‘Burgh defender.
With Newburgh down to 10 men the game became stretched Polatajko replaced Fortune in midfield and Johnston replaced Foy in the forward line. Newburgh pushed to find the elusive equaliser with Brechin playing counter attacking football.
Brechin were awarded a penalty after an innocuous challenge in the box as the ball was crossing the bye line was adjudged by the referee to have been a foul. Warrender kept Newburgh in the game with a fantastic save low to his right.
Wilson received a booking on 79 minutes for a tackle whilst tracking back, The resultant free kick led to a corner off the head of O’Brien. Newburgh went 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaining. The in-swinging ball was not dealt with by the first defender and the unfortunate Connolly turned the ball past Warrender.
On the 82nd minute Polatajko was booked following his first foul of the game. Wilson made his feelings known to the referee and was awarded his second yellow card in 3 minutes and sent to the showers.
With the last kick of the game a Brechin shot deflected off the outstretched foot of Brocklebank to loop over Warrender and settle in the net.
Alan Fortune commented after the game “we made it really hard for ourselves today and the sending off’s cost us. The first happened at a time when we were on top in the game and handed the momentum back to Brechin. We have a free week next week so we need to lick our wounds and regather ourselves for the next batch of fixtures.
